Associations between sexual health and well-being: a systematic review
Introduction
Sexual health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, yet it remains understudied in the context of its impact on mental and physical health. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines sexual health as “a state of completeness physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being and to participate in an intentional sexual relationship.”
This systematic review aims to examine the associations between sexual health and well-being, exploring the current state of research in this area.
Methods
A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and PsycINFO databases. Inclusion criteria were studies that examined the association between sexual health and well-being outcomes, such as mental health, physical health, or quality of life. Exclusion criteria included studies that focused on specific populations, such as children or prisoners, without exploring broader implications for well-being.
Findings
Mental Health Outcomes
Several studies have investigated the relationship between sexual health and mental health outcomes. A systematic review of 15 studies found a significant positive association between sexual satisfaction and depression (1). Conversely, a study examining the impact of sexual dysfunction on mental health reported a strong correlation with anxiety and stress (2).
Physical Health Outcomes
Research has also explored the link between sexual health and physical health outcomes. A cohort study revealed a significant inverse relationship between sexual activity and cardiovascular disease risk factors (3). Another study found that lack of access to reproductive healthcare services was associated with increased mortality rates among women (4).
Discussion
The findings of this systematic review highlight the critical role of sexual health in overall well-being. The association between sexual satisfaction and mental health outcomes is particularly noteworthy, as it underscores the importance of addressing sexual dysfunction as a potential contributor to mental illness.
Implications for Practice
Healthcare providers must consider the impact of sexual health on patient well-being when providing care. This includes discussing reproductive healthcare options, addressing sexual dysfunction, and promoting healthy relationships.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this systematic review has highlighted the associations between sexual health and well-being outcomes. The findings underscore the need for healthcare providers to address sexual health as a critical aspect of overall patient care.
